In Defense of Platonic Essentialism about Numbers

چکیده

In defense of anti-essentialism, pragmatist Richard Rorty holds that we may think all objects as if they were numbers. I find Rorty’s metaphysics hinges on two rather weak arguments against the essences contrast, Plato’s offers a plausible definition essentiality by which numbers do have essential properties. Further, argue argumentative mistake is mischaracterizing definition. conclude “essential” robust one implies many properties, beyond those might intuitively of, can count properties objects.

Essentialism and Anti-Essentialism in Feminist Philosophy

The heated feminist debates over 'essentialism' of the 1980s and early 1990s have largely died away, yet they raised fundamental questions for feminist moral and political philosophy which have still to be fully explored. Centrally at issue in feminist controversies over essentialism was whether there are any shared characteristics common to all women, which unify them as a group. Many leading ...

Platonic Surfaces

If SO is a Riemann surface with a complete metric of finite area and constant curvature −1, let SC denote the conformal compactification of SO. We show that, under the assumption that the cusps of SO are large, there is a close relationship between the hyperbolic metrics on SO and SC . We use this relationship to show that lim infk→∞ λ1(Pk) ≥ 5/36, where the Platonic surface Pk is the conformal...

Origins of Essentialism 1 on the Functional Origins of Essentialism

This essay examines the proposal that psychological essentialism results from a history of natural selection acting on human representation and inference systems.
